Department of the Treasury Seems to Be Implementing State Auditor Recommendations

Senate Republican Budget Officer Anthony Bucco issued the following comments regarding the release of an audit of the Senior Citizens’ and Veterans’ property tax deduction programs. The audit, conducted by the Office of the State Auditor, identified “weakness in the verification of eligibility” for the two property tax relief programs in question.

“It is disturbing that programs that are designed to help seniors and veterans cope with high property taxes in New Jersey are being abused. It is encouraging that the Department of the Treasury and the Department of Revenue are in the process of implementing the State Auditor’s recommendations.

“I hope that the State Auditor will continue to examine these programs and continue to identify the waste, fraud and abuse that is all-too common in the state budget.”

The State Auditor is a constitutional officer appointed by the Legislature and placed in the nonpartisan Office of Legislative Services. The Auditor conducts financial and performance audits of state agencies, school districts, the judiciary and state run or state supported programs.
