“Our promise to support the troops must extend beyond the battlefield,” Senator Bucco said. “The spouses and children our brave heroes leave behind need our support as well. My bill to allow active duty military personnel to defer property tax payments until they return home will provide invaluable support to their families in New Jersey. These families are already making extraordinary sacrifices – they should not have to struggle to make ends meet while their loved one fights to keep our country safe.”

Senator Bucco’s legislation to ensure New Jersey residents serving active duty can defer property tax payments during a term of deployment (S-1325) was advanced by the Senate. The bill, which will offer invaluable support to New Jersey’s military personnel, as well as their families at home in the Garden State, has also cleared the Assembly. It now heads to the Governor’s Desk for approval.

The Senate also advanced Senator Bucco’s bill allowing veterans to easily access copies of honorable discharge forms filed by a county clerk. Currently, veterans can file honorable discharge papers with the clerk for safekeeping, but the law is silent on how to secure a replacement form if a copy is lost or destroyed.

The bill (S-1666) creates a clear pathway to access discharge forms, which are essential for obtaining veteran support, services and discounts across the state. S-1666 now heads to the Assembly floor for legislative approval.

A third bill sponsored by Senator Bucco to allow children of active duty military personnel to stay within the school district their family resided in prior to a parent’s deployment was also advanced by the Senate. S-2155 ensures that children who face the constant fear of losing a parent to the perils of war are never forced to leave behind the friends and teachers who provide invaluable stability, love and support. The bill now heads to the Governor’s Desk for final approval.
