Legislation sponsored by Senator Anthony Bucco (R-Morris) allowing children of active duty military personnel to stay in the school within the district their family resided in prior to a parent’s deployment was advanced by the Senate Education Committee.

“Children who face the constant fear of losing a parent to the perils of war should never be forced to leave behind the friends and teachers who provide invaluable stability, love and support,” Senator Bucco said. “My bill will ensure that children of active duty soldiers can remain in their own schools while their parent is risking their life to serve our country and protect the liberties we hold dear.”

Sen. Bucco’s bill, S-2155, will ensure that these children can remain in their own school district, even if the child resides elsewhere during a parent’s term of active duty service. Following the return of the military parent, the child can remain enrolled in the school district through the end of the school year.

S-2155 applies not only to children of military personnel engaged in combat overseas, but also to members of the New Jersey National Guard serving during a national emergency, and reservists called to arms during a time of war. Under the bill, the school district would not be responsible for providing transportation if the child lives outside of the district. The bill now heads to the Senate floor for a full vote. If signed into law, the act will take effect immediately.
