Legislation sponsored by Senator Anthony Bucco (R-25) that expands state law enforcement powers of United States Park Police was recently signed into law.
“When Park Police officers encounter individuals committing crimes, they have no jurisdiction to make arrests or to issue summonses for the illegal conduct, ” Bucco stated. “This law allows for a quicker response time and lets local police officers attend to law enforcement duties in their own jurisdictions.”
The new law allows United States Park Police to make arrests while on duty for fourth degree crimes, disorderly and petty disorderly persons offenses, as well as for motor vehicle violations on property contiguous to the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island. Previously, these federal officers were only authorized to make arrests on state property for crimes of the first, second or third degree.
“This legislation gives the Park Police the authority they need to do their jobs more effectively and efficiently while providing a safe and friendly environment for residents and tourists, ” Bucco continued.
The United States Park Police in the federal Department of the Interior is the oldest uniformed federal law enforcement agency. These officers secure the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island and protect the visitors to these national treasures. They also serve as patrol officers, marine police, SWAT team members, explosives experts and terrorism detectives.
