Senator Jennifer Beck, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, issued the following statement regarding the failure of a bill that would have significantly strengthened New Jersey’s ethics laws. The bill, S-685 would end dual office holding.
“Last session, the Legislature voted to abolish dual office holding with the caveat that existing dual office holders could continue holding multiple offices. Not surprisingly, after the 2007 legislative elections, there were more dual office holders than there were before the elections. This is unacceptable. Dual office holding is an inherent conflict of interest and the Legislature must act to end this practice immediately.”
“I am saddened that my attempt to relieve this bill from committee failed along party lines. Ethics reform should be a bipartisan issue. I hope moving forward we can work together in a bicameral, bipartisan manner to adopt the most rigorous ethics reforms in the nation. It is the only way to regain the public’s trust.”
