Governor Christie has signed legislation sponsored by Senator Jennifer Beck (R-Monmouth) to protect a greater number of victims by making certain modifications to a law she pioneered, known as the “Sexual Assault Survivor Protection Act of 2015,” (SASPA) which went into effect in May of 2016.

“We took a huge leap forward last year by enacting SASPA, which ensures all sexual assault survivors receive the same protections from being re-victimized – regardless of the nature of their relationship with the abuser,” Senator Beck said. “Now we are expanding those protections to survivors who have obtained a restraining order in any of the 23 other states that have laws like SASPA. This is a huge victory for survivors in New Jersey and across the country.”

Senator Beck’s, S-2601, ensures New Jersey law recognizes and provides for the enforcement of protective orders originating from the 23 other states that also offer the protections established under SASPA.

The law also amends SASPA to prevent a parent who reports that their child has been sexually assaulted by another parent from using it to avoid criminal charges against the offending-parent. Rather, the reporting-parent must report the incident of sexual assault to the Division of Child Protection and Permanency for investigation and possible legal action under applicable existing law.

“These modifications will protect children who are at risk of being sexually abused by a parent,” Senator Beck said. “By making this change we will ensure that the Sexual Assault Survivor Protection Act continues to be used for the very reason we fought so hard to enact it – to protect all survivors from being further victimized by their abuser.”

S-2601 is one of Senator Beck’s many longstanding efforts to protect survivors of sexual and domestic violence. Today, Governor Christie also signed a bill sponsored by Senator Beck and inspired by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords to expand domestic violence protections.

“As a former rape crisis counselor, I know that there is always more we can do to expand and create protections for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence,” Senator Beck said. “The signing of this law is an example of our commitment to do just that.”
