Senator Jennifer Beck (R-12)

Beck Urges Governor Corzine to Press N.Y. to Pay Its Fair Share of Trans-Hudson Tunnel

Senator Jennifer Beck issued the following statement today asking New Jersey Governor Jon S. Corzine to press Governor David Patterson of New York to contribute to the cost of the $7.5 billion trans-Hudson rail tunnel. Both governors are in Washington D.C. today to lobby the federal government for more transportation funding. The current breakdown of costs for the tunnel is $1.5 billion from New Jersey, $3.5 billion from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and $3 billion from federal sources.

“Legislators from both parties have asked Governor Corzine to urge New York to pay for their fair share of the ARC tunnel, and I again ask him to take the opportunity today, while he and Governor Patterson are in Washington, to discuss the issue. The ARC tunnel will provide important access to New York City and will help grow the city and state’s economy. It will bring more commuters into the city via public transportation, helping to achieve Mayor Bloomberg’s stated goal of reducing congestion, and will secure the cities’ economic vitality for years to come.”

Beck concluded by saying, “A project of such magnitude should not be borne by one state but should be shared equally between New York and New Jersey. I hope Governor Corzine takes this opportunity to make that point to Governor Patterson.”
