Senators Jennifer Beck (R-12) and Kevin O’Toole(R-40) issued the following joint statement regarding the Senate State Government Committee’s refusal to adopt amendments that would have strengthened the reconstituted Joint Legislative Committee on Ethical Standards. The amendments were rejected in a party line vote.
“We are frustrated that the majority members of the committee didn’t see fit to join us in our efforts to make the re-formed Joint Legislative Committee on Ethical Standards stronger. Over the past several years, the public’s confidence in their government has been shaken by endless scandals.
“Three members of the Senate have been indicted by the U.S. Attorney for official misconduct, and two members of the General Assembly have been forced to resign and are awaiting trial on bribery charges. No wonder the electorate believes their government representatives are not interested in the common good.
“The amendments that were offered would have prohibited any member of the Legislature from seeking a grant for an employer and would require each member of the Legislature to disclose any public or private entities in which they have a business interest. The measures would apply to the annual Appropriations Act and any program that the Legislature or its members have substantial authority or control.”
