Senator Jennifer Beck (R-12) was the co-sponsor of a bill that allows racetracks, casinos and simulcasting facilities to remain open should the Legislature fail to enact a state budget before the constitutionally mandated deadline of midnight on June 30.
“Horse racing tracks are vital to New Jersey’s tourist economy, ” Beck stated. “It is imperative that we don’t cause individuals to lose their jobs or angry customers to quit coming to the state tracks simply because the lawmakers can’t agree on a budget in time.”
Racetracks shut down in 2006 because lawmakers failed to approve a budget by the deadline, angering taxpayers, workers and tourists who spend heavily with New Jersey businesses. The horse racing industry employs 13, 000 people, contributes $1.1 billion a year to our state’s economy and keeps 176, 000 acres, or about one-fifth of the state’s total acreage, in agriculture.
“The district I represent includes many of New Jersey’s horse farm communities, ” Beck continued. “This legislation allows the racetracks, casinos and off track wagering operations to continue to provide revenue to the economy and for government financing.”
A racetrack, casino or simulcasting facility that violates current law or regulation during a government shutdown would be subject to license suspension and fines up to 10 times the normal amount.
