Beck: Ethics Reform Needed Now

Democrats Table Ethics Reform Once Again

Senator Jennifer Beck (R-12) issued the following statement today regarding the tabling of a motion to bring Senate Bill 684 to a vote. Under Senate rule 12:6, Senator Beck requested that Senate Bill 684, banning wheeling through county committees be brought for a vote immediately.

“Government accountability is a key component to the integrity of any community. I am both disappointed and frustrated that the Democrats refused to post my bill and three others brought by Senate Republicans.

“A number of bills related to ethics reform have languished in committee for years, despite repeated assurances from Democrats that these measures were high on their agenda. In an effort to jumpstart these long-stalled reforms, we made several motions to relieve these bills from committee for a hearing before the full Senate, which the Democrats immediately blocked.”

“We gave them a broad range of ethics legislation and they rejected each and every one of them. These reform measures are needed to confront the influence that money buys in government.

“Now is the time we need to confront these issues. Not later. New Jersey Democrats have blocked every effort by Republicans to advance ethics reform in recent years. They have tabled more ethics bills than they have voted on. The delays on these important bills show Democrats cannot be sincere about ending corruption in New Jersey.”

The bills asked to be posted were:

S-287 (T.Kean), Limits contributions by certain public contractors; limits contributions by county and municipal political party committees.

S-760 (O’Toole), Establishes stricter limits on contributions to county committees of political parties and by county committees to candidates; prohibits contributions between county committees.

S-600 (Baroni), Prohibits campaign contributions by certain individuals, businesses or other organizations that purchase or acquire property involved in eminent domain proceedings.

S-684 (Beck), Prohibits county committee of a political party from contributing to or accepting contribution from another such county committee.
