Senator Jennifer Beck (R-12) issued the following statement today regarding the Senate Democrats’ refusal to adopt amendments that would have strengthened the reconstituted Joint Legislative Committee on Ethical Standards (Senate Bill 1442/Assembly Bill 2452). The amendment was rejected in a party line vote.
“I am frustrated that the majority members of the Senate didn’t see fit to join the Republicans in our effort to make the re-formed Joint Legislative Committee on Ethical Standards stronger. Over the past several years, the public’s confidence in their government has been shaken by endless scandals.
“Three members of the Senate have been indicted by the U.S. Attorney for official misconduct, and two members of the General Assembly have been forced to resign and are awaiting trial on bribery charges.
“This amendment is critical in our efforts to reform the corrupt system that continues to plague taxpayers. It is a prime example of change that the public has demanded and deserves.
The amendment that was offered would have prohibited any member of the Legislature from seeking a grant for an employer and would require each member of the Legislature to disclose any public or private entities in which they have a business interest. The measure would apply to the annual Appropriations Act and any program that the Legislature or its members have substantial authority or control.
