Senator Jennifer Beck, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee issued the following statement regarding Governor Corzine’s lack of fiscal oversight of the 31 Abbott districts.
“More than two years ago the State Commission of Investigation released a report on the ‘Questionable and Hidden Compensation for Public School Administrators’ and Governor Corzine took no corrective action. The SCI states ‘…that state government in New Jersey maintains a “hands-off” policy of long standing with regard to deliberations and decisions by local boards of educations regarding compensation and benefits for public school personnel.’ With the information contained in the SCI report common sense would indicate that the Corzine Administration would review existing contracts. Apparently they did not.
“Governor Corzine’s shameless posturing in regards to the Keansburg School Superintendent’s severance package is outrageous. Since Keansburg is an Abbott district it receives 74 percent of its funding from taxpayers across the state and the Corzine Administration’s fiscal oversight is beyond deficient.
“Even worse, when the administration was asked to provide payroll information for the Abbott districts the Corzine Administration responded that they were not available. New Jersey spends more than $4 billion, or 54 percent of state aid to educate approximately 20 percent of the students in the state and all we hear about are million dollar severance packages and overtime to charge cell phones. This administration provides no accountability, no oversight and no protection to the taxpayers. No wonder property taxes are so high.”
