Abbotts Aren’t Only Districts that Need Facilities for At-Risk Kids
Senator Christopher (Kip) Bateman the ranking Republican on the Senate Education Committee issued the following statement regarding the Corzine Administration’s filing a motion with the state Supreme Court seeking to end the court-ordered formula for funding to the 31 Abbott districts.
“The Corzine Administration’s argument that school aid should follow the child should also be applied to school construction aid. By the administration’s own admission, less than half of at-risk children are educated by the 31 special needs districts.
“It makes no sense that the court and the administration insist on carving out special exemptions for the 31 Abbott districts when all districts have facilities needs. In this time of exponentially increasing property taxes, both education funding and school construction aid should be equitably distributed based on the students, not the district.”
