Senator Christopher (Kip) Bateman, (R-16), issued the following statement today regarding the Chamber of Commerce’s endorsement of Governor Corzine’s plans to impose a massive new road tax on New Jersey’s working families.
“Imposing a massive new road tax on New Jersey’s taxpayers will surely increase the exodus of families out of the state. Last year, more than 72 thousand people left the state, driven away from their families and friends by the high cost of living. Over the past six years spending has increased by more than 50 percent, state taxes have increased by more than $15 billion and property taxes have increased by an average of 7 percent a year.
“Now the governor plans to make matters worse by creating a ‘Public Benefits Corporation” which will back bonds with higher tolls on the Turnpike, Parkway, Expressway and Route 440. The administration’s own figures put the toll hikes at more than 800 percent over 14 years.
“It seems obvious to everyone, but Governor Corzine, that the most sensible way to solve our budget mess is to cut spending. Over the next several weeks my colleagues and I will propose specific spending cuts. Our proposal will offer a balanced budget without toll hikes or tax increases.”
