User Fees to Pay for Program
A bill sponsored by Senator Christopher “Kip” Bateman (R-16) creating a trust fund to pay for a uniform attorney identification card was recently signed into law by Governor Corzine. The law ensures that revenues generated by the identification program, which was established in 2005, will be used exclusively for costs associated with issuing and monitoring the cards.
“Dedicating revenue generated by the ID program allows it to be self-sustaining, ” stated Bateman, a practicing attorney. “Previously, money was siphoned off from similar programs to balance the state and county budgets. This will no longer occur. Money collected for the ID program will be used only for that purpose.”
The uniform attorney ID card lets any attorney gain access to New Jersey courthouses with a standard form of identification, recognizable by any sheriff’s officer.
“This bill will improve courthouse safety and security, ” Bateman said. “A uniform ID card will allow security officers to properly and promptly screen lawyers who wish to enter government buildings.”
