Senator Christopher “Kip” Bateman, a member of the Senate Education Committee issued the following statement concerning Governor Corzine’s announcement that he will ask for at least an additional $2.5 billion for school construction.
“The last reiteration of the school construction program was rampant with waste, fraud and abuse. It is appalling that Governor Corzine would even think about asking for an additional $2.5 billion without making substantive changes in the agency managing this program.
“All they did was change the name from the Schools Construction Corporation to the School Development Authority. Given this administration’s record on fiscal oversight that is simply not good enough.
“All we hear about are million dollar severance packages and overtime for charging cell phones. Until this governor demands and receives real substantive change in the policies and procedures of this agency that guarantee that the taxpayer’s dollar is being stretched as far as it will go, I will not support his proposal. I will not support his proposal under any circumstances if it involves borrowing without voter approval.”
