Senator Christopher “Kip” Bateman, a member of the Senate Environment Committee, called today for senate hearings into the severe environmental contamination at the Xanadu entertainment site. Published reports in the Bergen Record detailed that contamination at the site is much more severe than previously reported.
“I am not surprised that the greatly troubled Xanadu entertainment complex is back in the news. It is deeply troubling that the severity of the environmental contamination at the site was not previously reported, ” Bateman stated. “Hearings to clear the air are appropriate, especially since senior state government officials, reportably, held significant financial interests in corporations involved in the in the project at some point, if not currently.
Xanadu is a 4.8 million square foot entertainment complex being built on a Brownfields site in the New Jersey Meadowlands. The Xanadu complex is adjacent to the new Jet/Giants stadium and the Izod Center.
“There needs to be transparency about the cleanup at the Xanadu site. The public interest and the public health must outweigh any other concern in this project. The Senate Environment Committee must hold hearings to determine why the severity of the environmental contamination was not disclosed earlier and ensure that the cleanup is thorough and proceeding in a timely manner. We cannot permit environmental contamination at this complex to threaten the health of the thousands of employees and visitors expected at the site when it opens, ” Bateman concluded.
