Fund New Trans-Hudson Tunnel With Existing Revenue
Senator Christopher “Kip” Bateman (R-Somerset), issued the following statement regarding hearings on Governor Corzine’s new toll increase proposal:
“The toll hearings currently being held by the Department of Transportation and the New Jersey Turnpike Authority show disrespect to suburban commuters. All three hearings are being held at times and in places, that make it impossible for middle-class commuters to attend.
“Combined with record prices for food and fuel and the meltdown on Wall Street, this proposed toll hike will only increase the financial pressure on New Jerseyans and could be the tipping point that pushes middle-class families into a fiscal crisis. “Under these circumstances it is unwise and imprudent to approve such a huge increase in tolls.
I believe that the New Jersey Turnpike Authority is insensitive to the financial stress on many families. The adverse effects the proposed toll hike would have on suburban commuters are clearly evident.
“The State of New Jersey must do more to live within its means. Don’t approve the governor’s huge toll hikes. We can fund transportation infrastructure improvements, like the new trans-Hudson rail tunnel using existing revenue generated by the Motor Vehicle Commission.”
