Questions Reliance on Offshore LNG Facilities
Senator Christopher “Kip” Bateman (R-Somerset), a member of the Senate Environment Committee, issued the following statement regarding the release of the New Jersey Energy Master Plan:
“The Governor’s plan is a good starting point for a thorough debate on New Jersey’s energy future” said Bateman. I look forward to reviewing the plan in detail, and I hope that the relevant committees of the Legislature dissect and debate this document in the weeks and months ahead.”
“There is much in the Governor’s plan to support, including enhanced energy efficiency for homes and buildings, encouragement of solar, wind, cogeneration and wave power technologies, and the adoption of demand reduction strategies,” said Bateman. “These technologies will permit New Jersey to reduce its energy consumption, and at the same time lower our emissions of greenhouse gases. A ‘business as usual’ approach to energy use will not help improve our energy security or protect the environment.”
“I am concerned, however, about the administration’s support for the construction of offshore liquefied natural gas terminals. I would especially like to know the details of what environmental standards the administration intends to employ when permitting these new facilities,” said Bateman. “We must be certain that New Jersey’s $40 billion shore tourism industry — which depends upon clean water and abundant natural resources — is not adversely impacted by this policy choice.”
