Senator Christopher (Kip) Bateman, (R-16), issued the following statement today blasting the Corzine administration for agreeing to borrow an additional $3.9 billion without voter approval. The additional debt will be used to fund school construction.
“The Governor is reneging on his commitment to the people of New Jersey to require voter approval of all debt. The additional $3.9 billion in borrowing that passed both houses of the Legislature, over united Republican opposition, will drive this state much deeper into debt.”
“I am astonished that both houses of the Legislature approved a constitutional amendment to require voter approval of all borrowing only minutes after they approved this new debt. I ask that the governor fix this contradiction and use his authority to reduce the amount to be borrowed to the original $2.5 billion and ask that the voters approve that amount at the ballot box in November.”
