Senator Christopher “Kip” Bateman issued the following statement after the New Jersey Legislature passed the fiscal 2010 budget without a single Republican vote in either house:
“New Jersey residents are suffocating under the weight of state and local taxes,” said Bateman, the Deputy Republican Conference Leader. “The Legislature has approved a budget that adds more than $1 billion to the already oppressive tax burden borne by middle-class New Jersey.
“Republicans stood united against its passage. I voted against this budget because it will stall economic growth and slow New Jersey’s recovery from this recession. Our state has to find a way to reduce the tax burden on both our job-creating businesses and on the middle-class workers who fill those jobs if we are to compete in the global marketplace.
“This budget also pushes billions of dollars of today’s expenses into the future. It will force our children and grandchildren to pay for our mistakes and inability to make the hard choices needed to govern.
“Next year, we can expect to face a budget deficit of $8 billion to $10 billion – the largest deficit in state history,” Senator Bateman said. “Perhaps next year will be the first year in many that we will finally produce a budget that isn’t out of balance by billions of dollars the minute it’s passed.”
