Bateman: COAH Law Puts State in Fast Lane to Economic Ruin

Senator Christopher “Kip” Bateman (R-Somerset) reacted to media reports that the 2.5% development tax in the new affordable housing law could apply to the New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, Cumberland County, and other important regional development projects.

“With each passing day, the disastrous impact of the COAH legislation becomes more apparent,” said Bateman, who opposed the legislation along with the other 16 Republican senators. “First it was the revelation that projects designed to lower power bills would be slowed by the new tax. Next, we discovered struggling farmers will pay if they try to improve the efficiency of their farms. Now the viability of economic development projects vital to regional economies is threatened.”

“New Jersey’s businesses are buckling under a relentless six-year surge in taxes and regulation. Why the Trenton Democrats would purposely vote to impose a tax on a project like the New Jersey Motorsports Park is baffling. Taxing projects designed to create new jobs is exactly the kind of policy that has given this State its reputation as anti-business.”

“One mayor was quoted in the Atlantic City Press as saying this is the worst piece of legislation he’s seen in 17 years of politics, and that the state will soon realize this is one of the worst pieces of legislation ever passed. The Democrats need to come back to the State House and join us in fixing this law now. The remedy must apply across the board, not just to projects favored by the politically powerful. All New Jersey needs relief from this law.”
