Legislation sponsored by Senator Christopher “Kip” Bateman (R-16) that would allow a person who owns preserved farmland to construct, install and operate solar or wind energy equipment was unanimously passed by the Senate Economic Growth Committee.
“Agriculture plays a vital role in New Jersey, creating jobs, preserving land, and providing recreational activities, ” Bateman stated. “Unfortunately, however, farming has become both a logistical and economic challenge for many farmers, forcing them to sell their land or to struggle financially. This bill would allow farmers to sell both produce and power.”
Senate Bill 1538 would require landowners to seek and obtain the approval of the State Agricultural Development Committee before constructing or installing the equipment. Power generated could then be used to operate the farm or sold to a utility company.
“We all know the inherent benefits solar and wind energy provide for the environment, continued Bateman. ” In addition, generating power for the operation of the farm would result in savings for the farmer, and sale of such power to utilities would provide for enhanced income.”
The bill now goes before the full Senate for consideration.
