Legislation sponsored by Senator Christopher “Kip” Bateman (R-16) requiring Assisted Living Facilities to have a defibrillator on site and employees trained to use it was recently signed into law by Governor Corzine. The new law requires assisted living facilities to comply with the same requirements concerning defibrillators as those that apply to nursing homes.
“The use of a defibrillator is one of the most successful ways to treat cardiac arrests, ” stated Bateman. “By requiring assisted living facilities to have a defibrillator on site with properly trained staff, the residents of those facilities will have a greater chance of surviving a heart attack.”
Under the new law, assisted living facilities will be required to have at least one tested and maintained defibrillator in a central location. Facilities are also required to have at least one employee trained in the use of the device available in the building at all times.
“For every minute without defibrillation, the odds of survival for a victim of sudden cardiac arrest drop 7% to 10%, ” Bateman continued. “This is a common-sense law that will help save lives.”
