“Purged” E-Mails Must Be Found
Senator Bill Baroni (R-14) asked Governor Corzine and Attorney General Anne Milgram, in a letter sent today, to take steps to reconstruct e-mail records from the McGreevey administration. Published reports indicate that the records were routinely “purged” by officials in the McGreevey administration. The letter is attached.
“E-mails rarely ever totally disappear, they can nearly always be recovered, ” Baroni stated. “The administration should take extraordinary measures to retrieve and reconstruct the missing communications. Additionally, e-mails have both a point of origin and a destination. The governor and the Attorney General must inform all state departments to begin reconstructing all electronic records that may have been sent to or sent from the scandal plagued McGreevey administration.”

Dear Governor Corzine and Attorney General Milgram:
I am writing to request that you begin taking steps to fully reconstruct the email record of Governor James E. McGreevey’s administration. As you are no doubt aware, today’s Star Ledger reports that emails were routinely “purged” by that administration. The email “purges” are extraordinarily troubling, especially in light of several criminal investigations, including one federal investigation into that administration’s handling of hundreds of millions of dollars of grants programs.
It is common knowledge that emails don’t simply disappear once they are “purged, ” whatever that term may mean. Emails can always be retrieved, depending on how far someone wants to go to retrieve them. Email records can also be reconstructed by soliciting copies of emails from those who have sent them and not unlawfully deleted what they sent.
I will ask that our legislative leaders support your efforts to reconstruct the record of emails to and from the McGreevey administration by turning over to you all emails sent to the administration and by giving you whatever assistance, authority, and financial resources you need to do the job. I would encourage you to request that individual departments do the same.
A true and accurate accounting of history is essential, and I trust that you will do whatever it takes to retrieve the emails that certain people sought to make disappear from history forever. I look forward to a response indicating the steps you have taken and intend to take to rebuild a record that others have sought to hide.
Respectfully,
Bill Baroni
Senator, 14th District
