A bill sponsored by Senators Sean Kean (R-Monmouth) and Diane Allen (R-Burlington) that would create a task force to address the needs of older workers was unanimously passed by the Senate Labor committee today. Senate Bill 2450 would create a nine-member panel to study and make recommendations to help senior workers succeed in New Jersey’s labor force.
“Economic necessity, better health and the simple desire to continue experiencing the challenges and rewards of working life are leading more people to remain employed beyond the traditional retirement age,” Kean stated. “Unfortunately, age discrimination or outdated work skills may be hindering the ability of seniors to get jobs. This legislation would help ensure that both the needs of older workers and employers are being met.”
“Older people have so much to offer employers, including workplace and life experiences that younger workers can’t yet match,” Allen continued. “This legislation is designed to help qualified seniors find work, and educate employers about the best ways to attract and take full advantage of the skills of older employees.”
The task force would consist of the Commissioner of Health and Senior Services, Commissioner of Labor and Workforce Development, a representative from the New Jersey Business and Industry Association, a representative of the Chamber of Commerce, and five public members appointed by the Governor, including one representative of the AFL-CIO or its affiliates and a representative of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP).
The task force will be responsible for submitting a final report containing its findings and recommendations to the Governor and Legislature no later than six months after the date of its initial meeting.
