Senator Diane Allen (R-Burlington, Camden) expressed anger today that the Corzine Administration’s miscalculation of sales tax reimbursement to towns with Urban Enterprise Zones (UEZs) could lead to higher property taxes in some towns or layoffs in others.
“I am highly disturbed by published reports that indicate that towns with UEZs have had funds grabbed without notice,” Allen stated. This is another example of the complete lack of transparency in the Corzine administration. Through no fault of their own these towns received funds from the state in error. UEZS are towns that by definition towns are disadvantaged and many may be unable to cover the loss of these resources.”
Statewide 37 municipalities with UEZs were overpaid by state government about $40 million. Mount Holly, Burlington County is one of the towns affected by the over-payment of sales tax collections. This week Mount Holly had $324,651.14 taken by the State, before anyone ever bothered to let the town know of the problem.
“It is unconscionable that the Corzine Administration would snatch these monies from the town’s account without even telling them why,” Allen continued. “This was Corzine’s mistake after all. The administration should have communicated the problem to the towns, had open discussions on how to resolve the issue, and worked with the municipalities on a plan to repay the funds on an installment schedule.”
