Legislation sponsored by Senator Diane Allen and Senate President Steve Sweeney, honoring a former New Jersey State Trooper killed in the line of duty by naming a section of state highway in his name, was signed into law on August 7, 2017 by Governor Christie.

Sens. Diane Allen Steve Sweeney’s bill, now law, designates a portion of Route 295 as “State Trooper Sean E. Cullen Memorial Highway.” Trooper Cullen, a native of Cinnaminson – a town within Sen. Allen’s district, was tragically killed in the line of duty last year. (Facebook/NJSP)

The law, S-3244, designates a portion of Interstate Highway Route 295 in West Deptford Township as the “State Trooper Sean E. Cullen Memorial Highway” in honor of State Trooper Sean Cullen, who was tragically killed in the line of duty while responding to a traffic accident on Interstate Highway Route 295 in West Deptford Township.

“Trooper Cullen was a devoted son, brother, and soon-to-be husband and father to an infant son,” Senator Allen (R-Burlington) said. “Our community banded together to support his young family after he tragically died in the line of duty. He was our hometown hero and a remarkable role model for new law enforcement officers in this state. Renaming part of Route 295 in his memory is the least we can do to honor his dedicated service to the people of New Jersey.”

“Trooper Cullen gave his life in the line of duty serving the needs of others in a courageous act where he made the ultimate sacrifice,” said Senator Sweeney. “We ask our law enforcement officers and emergency response workers to put themselves in harm’s way, as Trooper Cullen and so many other troopers do every day.”

On March 8, 2016, State Trooper Cullen tragically lost his life on Interstate Highway Route 295, in West Deptford Township, New Jersey, while on duty responding to a motor vehicle accident and subsequent motor vehicle fire.

The Commissioner of Transportation will be authorized to receive financial assistance from private sources for both of the highway memorials.
