Senator Diane Allen (R-7) issued the following statement to explain the senior freeze property tax reimbursement program and eligibility requirements.
“I have been talking with a lot of folks about property taxes lately and was surprised to learn that many senior citizens in my district do not have accurate information about the PTR program. I want ensure that all seniors know that there is a program that freezes property taxes for those that are eligible by reimbursing them for property tax increases once they turn 65.”The following are the eligibility requirements for the senior freeze program:
Sixty five or older or receiving Federal Social Security disability benefits
Lived in New Jersey continuously for at least 10 years as a homeowner or a renter
Lived and owned a home for at least 3 years
Paid the full amount of property taxes due on your home for the base year and each succeeding year
Meet income limits for the base year of which you are applying; income less than $43, 693 (singles) and $53, 466 (married couples) for 2006
Even though the leaders in Trenton are bragging about increased property tax relief this year, the unfortunate fact is many seniors will not see any increase at all in their property tax rebate checks. Senator Allen personally implored the Governor and the State Treasurer to include seniors in this tax relief measure, but they told her “NO”. Senator Allen sponsored legislation earlier this year that would guarantee homeowners over the age of 65 a minimum 20 percent increase over the previous year’s rebate, but it’s languishing in committee
“Seniors living on fixed incomes have been the hardest hit by the 35 percent jump in property taxes that has occurred the past five years. It’s a shame that year after year the politicians in Trenton continue the wasteful spending that leads to an increase in property taxes” added Allen. “I promise to continue to fight to implement a spending cap, to vote against wasteful spending and to work to make New Jersey affordable again. In the meantime, I want to encourage seniors to make certain they take advantage of programs like senior freeze, which can help them save money.”
