“For 100 years Fort Dix has been crucial to the economy of New Jersey and the defense of our country,” Senator Allen said. “Even as it enters its second century, it maintains an important role in our armed forces, and it’s still one of the largest employers in the state.”

Fort Dix was established in 1917 as a training and staging camp for soldiers during World War I. The resolution, SJR-84, recognizes the base’s 100th Anniversary in 2017. First known as Camp Dix, the base was named after General John Adams Dix, a veteran of the War of 1812 and the Civil War, who also served as a United States Senator, Secretary of the Treasury and Governor of New York.

In 2009, Fort Dix was merged with neighboring Air Force and Naval Facilities to create Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, the first tri-service joint base in the country. Fort Dix is still home to Army Reserve training, as well as mobilizations operations. The Joint Base supports more than 40,000 military and civilian employees and contributes more than $7 billion annually to the state’s economy.

“The base is so important to the economic vitality of our state and for the livelihoods of so many of our residents,” Senator Allen said. “It’s important to continue to promote the base, protect its missions and ensure it remains a viable military installation for years to come.”
