Senator Diane Allen (R-7), a member of the Senate Health Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee, received the “2008 New Jersey Association of Community Providers Legislative Award” today. Senator Allen has demonstrated a commitment to those New Jersey residents living with developmental disabilities and has a proven record of advocating for support to assist our most needy population with developmental disabilities.
Senator Allen is the Prime sponsor of S-1650, the “Self-Directed Support Services for Persons with Developmental Disabilities Rights Act”, which is now headed to the Senate floor for a vote. Her sponsorship of several bills for increasing protections for those living with developmental disabilities displays the Senator’s advocacy on behalf of the state’s most vulnerable population. One such bill sponsored by the Senator creates the crime of victimization of a person with a disability or a senior citizen as a separate crime with increased penalties.
“I am honored to receive this award from the NJACP, and I look forward to continuing to work with the Association to help better the lives of those with developmental disabilities,” Allen stated. “However, the real champions are those who have overcome their challenges and enriched our society with their contributions.”
