Senator Diane Allen (R-Burlington) has introduced pay equity legislation following months of negotiations to determine an effective and reasonable solution.

Sen. Diane Allen introduced pay equity legislation on May 25, 2017 following months of negotiations to determine an effective and reasonable solution. (

“I’ve worked with legislators and the administration for months in an effort to reach consensus on reasonable reforms that will ensure pay equity for women,” said Allen.

Here are three major reforms that the legislation would accomplish:

  1. Provide the ability to collect full back pay (under certain circumstances) for the full period of wage discrimination. This is a huge improvement over the federal law, which limits back pay to two years.
  2. Provide for double damages.
  3. Provide employees the ability to determine if they’re being discriminated against without incurring the wrath and reprisals of their employer (governmental bypass would allow employee to obtain info anonymously).

“I believe we have the opportunity to do something that will break ground for women nationally,” Allen added. “I encourage anyone who is serious about finding a solution on pay equity to join me in supporting this proposal.”
