Deputy Senate Republican Leader Diane Allen of Burlington filed a bill today that would speed up critically needed aid to New Jersey families facing homelessness.
“The Housing Assistance and Recovery Program (HARP) signed into law by Governor Corzine on Jan. 9 will not take effect until April 1,” Senator Allen said. “Non-profit groups say they need and are ready to use the $15 million allocated under this vital program today. My bill would let these community activists begin saving the homes of New Jersey residents immediately.”
HARP provides money to non-profit and government groups to help buy homes from families who can no longer meet their mortgage payments. The groups will lease the homes back to the previous owners until they can afford to pick up the payments again.
“Unemployment has surged to more than 7 percent. Foreclosures are climbing. Families are hurting. We can’t help every family, but we can ease the fears of many by speeding up the distribution of this aid.”
Senator Allen noted that speeding up aid will immediately prevent New Jerseyans from having to leave their homes, split up their families or disrupt the education of young children while they search for work and shelter.
