Senator Diane Allen a member of the Senate Education Committee expressed serious concern regarding excessive spending at the School’s Development Authority detailed in Sunday’s Star Ledger:
“It seems that despite all the reassurances in the world from the top management at the Schools Development Authority the school construction program is reverting to an all too familiar pattern of wasteful spending. If you look at the Millville school construction project, you can understand how New Jersey blew through $8.6 billion of the taxpayers’ money with little accountability.
“The officials in the Millville school district wanted to spend $43 million to renovate the existing high school. Through Trenton’s largess they are slated to receive nearly four times as much to construct a new school. The $163 million will be disbursed even though the school district has no site for the building and no budget for the project.
“I have no doubt that Millville needs updated facilities to prepare students for the future. However I am disturbed by the bureaucratic meddling from Trenton insiders who have no regard for how taxpayer money is spent. This sadly increases the tax and debt burden on middle class families. Apparently pork barrel spending is alive and well in the halls of the State House.”
