What Is the Administration’s Budget Alternative After the Pension Deferral Scheme Fails?
Senator Diane Allen, a member of the Senate Education Committee, today called on Governor Corzine to define exactly how his $75 million in education cuts will impact New Jersey’s 619 school districts.
“I am very disturbed by reports published by the Associated Press that the Corzine Administration is moving forward with a $75 million cut to local schools for the current school year. The Governor told the AP that he would move forward with cuts to education aid even if his pension deferral scheme failed.
“All seventeen members of the Senate Republican Caucus have stated that they will not vote for Governor Corzine’s latest budget gimmick. Additionally, several prominent members of his own party are dead set against the Governor’s latest one-shot budget gimmick.
“The Governor promised the public lower property taxes during his campaign four years ago. Not only has he never cut taxes, instead he is talking about, perhaps, the largest increase in property taxes in New Jersey history.
“School budgets are due in about a month. Governor Corzine must release a list of his planned cuts so that local districts can plan accordingly. To do anything less is imprudent and unfair to middle-class property taxpayers across the state.”
