Governor Refuses to Call Special Session on Ethics Reform Until After Election Day
Senator Diane Allen (R-Burlington, Camden) issued the following statement today regarding Governor Jon Corzineās refusal to call a special session of the legislature to implement legitimate and comprehensive ethics reform measures without loopholes:
“The ethical transgressions of the last year have cast the dark cloud of corruption over New Jersey government. Numerous public officials have been arrested, indicted or charged with a dizzying array of illegal acts or unethical behavior.
“The recent arrest of two legislators highlights the critical need for stronger and wide-ranging ethics legislation. The Legislature can put an end to the pervasive culture of corruption that seems to be engulfing our state by adopting a ban on dual office holding for all office holders and comprehensive prohibitions on the practice of wheeling and ‘Pay-to-Play.’
“Last week we asked the Governor to call the Legislature into a special session today to enact real ethics reform, the governor refused to act. During his inauguration speech Governor Corzine insisted that the people hold him accountable. Well they are and he has dropped the ball on this issue.”
