Allen Calls On Corzine To Veto DRPA Minutes To Avert 66% Toll Hike

Senator Diane Allen sent a letter today to Governor Jon Corzine asking him to veto the actions of all the New Jersey Commissioners of the Delaware River Port Authority if they vote for a proposed toll hike in August. Governor Corzine’s veto would prevent the toll hike.

The letter follows:

July 28, 2008

Honorable Jon S. Corzine
Governor of New Jersey
Governor’s Chambers
State House
Trenton, New Jersey 08625

Dear Governor Corzine:

I am deeply troubled to have learned that the Delaware River Port Authority is proposing a 66 percent toll hike over two years on the four Delaware River bridges and the PATCO high speed line they operate. I write today to respectfully request that you exercise your statutory authority under N.J.S.A 32:3-4c, to return the minutes to the Delaware River Port Authority with a veto against the actions of all New Jersey Commissioners of the DRPA if they vote to approve the increase in August. Your veto will effectively prevent this unwise, imprudent and insensitive toll hike.

Governor, it is hard enough for South Jersey commuters to pay $3.00 every day to drive to work in Pennsylvania as so many do; it is unconscionable to think that during these difficult times, you could ask folks to ultimately pay $5.00 a day. As you know, I have been speaking with you for some time about the State of New Jersey living within its means. Just as the State is not increasing its expenditures this year, so the DRPA must follow the State’s lead and live within its means.

Combined with record prices for food and fuel as well as the continuing foreclosure crisis, this proposed toll hike will only increase the growing financial pressure on New Jerseyans and could very well be the tipping point that pushes some South Jersey families into a fiscal crisis. One only needed to listen briefly to the testimony during the DRPA hearings before the adverse effect the proposed toll hike would have on South Jersey residents became evident.

Thank you in advance for your immediate attention to this matter. Should you have any questions or wish to discuss this issue further, I would be happy to speak with you at any time.

Sincerely,
Diane B. Allen
Senator, 7th Legislative District – NJ
