A bill sponsored by Senator Diane Allen (R-Burlington) to provide tuition benefits to members of the reserve components of the armed forces was passed by Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee.

Legislation by Sen. Diane Allen to extend tuition benefits to members of the armed forces reserves. (

Under current law, members of the New Jersey National Guard can attend regularly-scheduled courses at a public institution and receive up to 16 credits per semester for free. This legislation, S-1915, extends that benefit to reservists as long as he or she is a resident of New Jersey.

“Signing up for service in our military is a huge commitment,” Senator Allen said. “People who make that commitment deserve our gratitude, as well as a chance to benefit from their service in civilian life. This bill provides them with an education as a small way of thanking them for their service.”

The bill also provides tuition benefits to the child or surviving spouse of a member of the reserves who has been killed in the line of duty. The child or spouse must also be a resident of New Jersey.

“We already have benefits in place for members of the Armed Forces, as well as our National Guard,” Senator Allen said. “Serving in the reserves is just as noble and as important for our country. These servicemen and women should get the same benefits.”
