Home-Baked and Store-Bought Treats Can Be Donated on Dec. 7 at 8th District Office on Rt. 70 in Medford

Senator Dawn Marie Addiego, Assemblyman Scott Rudder and Assemblyman Chris Brown will open their 8th District Legislative Office to collect donated home-baked cookies and sweet treats for shipment to U.S. military men and women deployed in Afghanistan and supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

The office, located at 176 Route 70 East, just behind the Dunkin Donuts, will accept goodies on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“The cookie drive is a great opportunity to recognize the contributions of our military men and women, and a chance to share the spirit of the season with our soldiers who will not be able to spend the holidays with their loved ones,” said Senator Addiego. “We are hopeful families planning to do some holiday baking will remember our troops, and bake an extra batch to share with them.”

This is a one-day “Cookie Lift” operation, and volunteers from Operation Yellow Ribbon of South Jersey will be on hand to collect goodies and pack them for immediate shipping to our troops. Packages will be in the air on Monday morning.

“We are helping to send a little taste of the holiday season to our heroes in a far-away land,” said Assemblyman Brown. “It will be great if people can take the time to bake some homemade cookies, but if you don’t have time to spend in the kitchen, we will happily accept commercially prepared cookies and holiday treats.”

The 8th District office has been a collection sight for donated care-items for our troops for more than four years. Recently, we joined forces with a new group of hard-working local volunteers dedicated to shipping care packages to our service members. Operation Yellow Ribbon of South Jersey, a non-profit following in the footsteps of The Yellow Ribbon Club, has shipped almost 26,000 pounds of treats and toiletries to our troops this year.

“Our office has been proud to play a role in the delivery to our troops of care items, little things we may take for granted at home in South Jersey, but treasured luxury items for our soldiers in hostile areas far from home,” said Assemblyman Rudder. “The Cookie Drive is something extra special during this time of year when being away from family and friends is extra difficult.”

The organization asks that home-baked cookies be placed in layers in a large Ziploc bags or in Glad disposable containers. Containers will be shipped overseas, and will not be returned.

Contributors are encouraged to include personal, unsealed notes to the troops. Children are encouraged to create their own holiday cards or notes of support for our troops, and adults may include their e-mail address for a possible response from a soldier.

In addition to the cookie drive, the 8th District Office will continue to collect “comfort” items for our deployed troops. We know our military men and women are especially fond of Girl Scout Cookies, Tastykakes, chewing gum, dried fruit, beef jerky, baby powder and baby wipes, non-chocolate candy (Skittles, Swedish Fish, Twizzlers), and beef jerky.

Like the cookies, these items are packed and shipped to our troops by Operation Yellow Ribbon of South Jersey. To learn more about the organization and its activities, visit
