8th District Legislative Office Will Serve as Drop-off Location for Holiday Treats for Troops During Medford’s Dickens Festival on Dec. 4
Assemblywoman Dawn Marie Addiego and Assemblyman Scott Rudder have joined forces with the Yellow Ribbon Club to collect holiday cookies and other sweet treats for American troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Holiday treats can be dropped off a the legislators’ 8th District office during the Dickens Festival, 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, along Main Street in Medford. The office is located at 32A North Main Street.
“Our office has been a drop-off site for items donated to the troops for several years, and we are proud of the generous support of local residents,” said Assemblywoman Addiego, who will be sworn in as the 8th District’s Senator in December. “The cookie drive is a great opportunity to recognize the contributions of our military men and women, and a chance to share the spirit of the season with our soldiers who will not be able to spend the holidays with their loved ones.”
The Yellow Ribbon Club will also be accepting cookie donations from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, at the Marlton United Methodist Church, 2 Marlborough Avenue, Evesham. The club has been collecting and shipping holiday treats to the troops for four years.
“So many thoughtful people come into our office with bags full of items to be shipped to our troops. It is heart-warming to see the level of support, but donating cookies is a little more personal,” said Assemblyman Rudder. “What better way to show our service people that we appreciate their sacrifices?”
Marlton resident Leslie Drummond, who along with her husband Michael founded the Yellow Ribbon Club in 2006, said her organization must ship the snacks by December 6 in order to get them to the troops on the ground in time for Christmas.
“It would be great if people can take the time to bake some homemade cookies for our heroes, but we will gladly accept store-bought cookies, too. As long as they are dropped off during the Dickens Festival, the Yellow Ribbon Club will ship them to our troops fresh and in time for the holidays,” said Assemblywoman Addiego.
The Yellow Ribbon Club’s Drummond suggests that home-baked cookies should be placed in zip lock bags or Glad disposable containers. Brownies and other bread-type snacks should be wrapped in plastic and placed in a container to prevent crushing during shipment. Avoid using tin containers – they are heavy and add to the cost of shipping.
Residents can continue to drop off items to be shipped to Afghanistan and Iraq at the 8th District office.
Gillette shaving gel and disposable razors, foot powder, candles, AA batteries, cans of tuna, eye drops, plastic utensils, and toilet paper are popular with deployed troops.
