Hour-Long Discussion Will Offer Tips and Strategies at 8 a.m. on Oct. 30

Criminal fraud targeting business entities and threatening their financial survival is a serious and growing problem, and learning how to spot scams and protect your organization from the threats will be the topic of the 8th Legislative District Business Roundtable on Wednesday, October 30.

“Business fraud is running rampant in this country,” said Senator Dawn Marie Addiego. “Criminals prefer to target small and mid-size companies because they lack the resources to protect themselves and monitor complicated financial transactions.”

Senator Addiego and Assemblyman Chris Brown will host Frank Carmody, an investigator for the Attorney General and the Division of Community Affairs, from 8 to 9 a.m. at the Red Lion Diner, Routes 70 and 206 in Southampton.

The Inspector will discuss fraud scams that target commercial enterprises, and share tips to help businesses avoid the traps. Carmody will explain common check, cash and wire transfer schemes; credit card skimming; preventing employee fraud; and how to avoid social networking scams.

“Developments in technology have created new opportunities for fraud. Being aware of some of the current fraud trends may help you stop the problem before it starts,” said Assemblyman Brown. “Business men and women need to be ever-vigilant.”

Carmody will also introduce business people to the benefits of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Unit, effective utilization of employee background checks, and the value of adopting and following a refund policy. Businesses will also learn how to execute a legal telemarketing campaign within the rules of the “Do Not Call List,” and how to defend against identity theft.

“Today’s scammers are global, educated, talented, ruthless and greedy,” said Senator Addiego. “They use the best technology for the worst reasons, stealing money from unsuspecting businesses. They are difficult to apprehend and convict, and recouping any loss is virtually impossible.”

Since unveiling the Business Roundtable series in 2010, the 8th District legislators have offered members of the local business community an opportunity to meet face-to-face with key individuals from State Government and related entities.

Previous guest speakers have included Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection commissioner Bob Martin, State Treasurer Andrew Sidamon-Eristoff, Department of Banking and Insurance commissioner Thomas B. Considine, and Caren Franzini from the New Jersey Economic Development Authority.

Seating for the Business Roundtable is extremely limited. Reserve a spot by calling Josh Foote at the 8th District office at (609) 654-1498, or sending e-mail to jfoote@njleg.org. Coffee and Danish will be served.
