An Assembly Resolution to prevent the relocation of detainees from Guantanamo Bay to New Jersey soil has been introduced by Assemblywoman Dawn Marie Addiego and Assemblyman Scott Rudder.
“We want to lock the gates and keep these terrorists out of our state,” said Assemblyman Rudder. “We don’t want them. We don’t need them. And nothing good can come from having them here.”
Earlier this year, President Obama issued an Executive Order to shut down the Guantanamo Bay prison within a year.
“By bringing these terrorists here and detaining them in our prisons or on our bases, we will put New Jersey residents in harms way by making our communities attractive targets for terrorist plots,” said Assemblywoman Addiego. “We’ve already survived a near-miss with terrorists plotting a horrific attack on Ft. Dix.”
“The Director of the FBI has warned that bringing these terrorists here could encourage attacks. We think it would be foolhardy not to heed that warning and to import these detainees and to place New Jersey in the terrorists’ cross-hairs,” said Assemblyman Rudder.
Legislators in several other states, including California, Missouri and Virginia, have already passed resolutions to block Guantanamo Bay prisoners from being relocated there.
“The Ft. Dix Six demonstrated our vulnerability to terrorist plots,” said Assemblywoman Addiego. “The last thing we need to do is increase the risk to our base and our soldiers.”
